Nov 1984 Carnage

  • The 1984 Sikh massacre refers to a series of organized pogroms against Sikhs in India following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
  • After Indira Gandhi’s assassination, her supporters launched attacks on Sikhs in Delhi and other parts of India in retaliation. Mobs roamed the streets, killing Sikh men and burning their homes, businesses and gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship).
  • The violence lasted for several days. Official Indian government reports state about 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 3,350 nationwide, however independent estimates suggest the death toll was over 8,000.
  • The mass killings took place with the complicity and in some cases active participation of police and politicians. Eyewitnesses reported police guiding rioters and providing lists of Sikh residences and businesses.
  • No senior politicians were punished for inciting the pogroms. Allegations persist that Indira Gandhi’s son and successor Rajiv Gandhi was also involved in orchestrating the violence against Sikhs.
  • Only 30 people have been convicted for the killings despite several commissions and investigations. Justice has been slow for victims and their families.
  • The 1984 massacre remains one of the bloodiest episodes of communal violence in modern Indian history and a major human rights issue demanding accountability and closure for Sikhs.
